Best Play Dough Recipe

I am just gonna admit it....I love some playdough, so when I came across a recipe called "The Best Playdough Recipe" , I had to try it and I must say , it is pretty good :)

{INGREDIENTS}

1 C Flour
1 C Water
1/4 C Salt
1 TBSP Vegetable Oil
2 tsp Cream of Tarter
Food Coloring (actual coloring or a kool-aid packet will do)
Sparkles (If you wanna be a fun mom!)
Sauce Pan and Wooden Spoon
Little helping hands.

adelynSTONE, suggest to use less salt as not to dry out the dough and the Cream of Tarter is to hold it all together. I think that it is what makes the dough last. She also put her play dough in "snap" lid babyfood containers,but you can certainly put them in the plastic snap lid containers that you can purchase at any Dollar Store. I also like the pretty pastel colors that she used as these would make great party favors with a customizable label.

Don't forget our other popular post for EDIBLE PLAY DOUGH

FUN PHOTO EDITORS: TAKING PICTURES TO ANOTHER LEVEL

I am always on a quest to find a way to enhance as well as take better photos. If you have Photoshop and can actually use it , lol...then there is never a problem executing your own creations.
But for those of you who are not Photoshop proficient, there are several great online photo editors that can take your photos to the next level. These are not just for your business, they can be used for your blog or just a fun way to spice up those digital photos.

The following are some of the best

Loonapix: is on of my favorties, they have so many templates to choose from. Not only the more "stylized, artisic" ones but some very funny, celebrity interfaces as well..This one is a must see:)

beFunky: allows you to add some really lovely effects to your photos as well as the standard photo effects like lighten and darken. This easy interface allows the user to create great artistic effects without any " technical' knowledge.

piZap: is one of the more entertaining photo editors that allows you to either upload your own photos or use your webcam. Its free and online, so no need to download anything. If you want to see what it can do , just use on of the 4 demo photos and play around.

Photofunia:
is a hilariously fun web based tool that allows you to upload your photos and apply different cool effects to them. Scroll through over 100 different photo effects or if you are looking for something in particular selected the by "categories". Each effect has photo requirements and they state them right above the the upload button. When I tell you I had some fun with my pics, I really did! You can have a celebrity holding your portrait, to a large size banner in Times Square. This tool is definitely worth a look, just make sure to hit the "Download File" button, ad they usually have some add running above it and if you are not careful you could hit the ad for something.

Poladroid: is the easiest way to make a high resolution polaroid-like picture from your photos. You do need to download the "app" to your desktop (in the shape of a polaroid camera) but its free and small...This app is awesome!

My Heritage: is a web based program from the My Heritage geneology website that lets you upload photos and find out which celebrity closest resembles you. There is also a tool that lets you upload two photos and it will morph them together, so if you wanted to look like Halle Berry or Angelina Jolie, just put a photo of them in and it will morph you into them in a series of photos.

Write on It: is a web based free program that lets you create cards, make your own magazine covers (from major magazines like People, Wired, Redbook, etc) or put your face on a celebrity body. Yes, I said put your face on the bodies of celebrities in well known popular pictures, lol. It looks like most people use the magazine cover the most.

Hairmixer: is a web based program that allows you to put different hair styles on your face or another face. Now this is not really beneficial as a business tool, we just think it downright funny. You can either upload two photos or use the celebrity gallery photos. A friend of mine used this tool to to see what her and her boyfriends kids would look like...did I say it was a hilarious tool?

Magmypic: is a web based program that lets you put any photo on a magazine. Much like Write on It, this site has pre-generated magazines, not the legitimate ones on the stand.

Hollywood Hair: though not really used for your business, it is entertaining....just upload your photo and try on different hairstyles made popular by celebrities.

BUSINESS CARDS:MARKETING FOR UPCOMING CRAFT SEASON

When we hosted the "Business Card Giveaway" last year, we posted some sources for making your own Business Cards. Since the 2010 Craft Season has just started we thought we would revisit the post for as a refresher for those of you who are about to begin your craft season or are about to do your first show.
___________________________________________

Alot of times I have bought items and received business cards and have been somewhat surprised. Here are these great products and then when it comes to the business card or marketing material, the same thought wasn't put into them. I have seen countless business cards made of that thin office supply store cardstock or the "pre scored" packaged cardstock with some skewed resized banner placed on it .

Business cards are important as they display your company brand and are a representation of you . Great business cards will leave an impression on the buyer, making them remember you and your product, which is what you are ultimately aiming for. But, sometimes sellers forget to put as much thought into them as they do their actual products ,which may leave you forgotten by the buyer.

There are a number of different programs that you can use to create business cards (we do not suggest Microsoft Word or Paint) but setting up the layout properly and getting it ready to print can be the most challenging part.
If you are not crafty , your home printer is not "up to par" or just don't know where to start. You can contact one of the many sellers and buy a premade design that you can just add your information to. Or you can buy a "design file" which can then be printed as many times as you want, either at home or you can take to one of the many online business card printing services.
The following are a few, just remember to research , read the fine print and ask around if unsure about feedback from these sites...don't forget to troll the Forums as well for reviews.
____________________________________
{BUSINESS AND MARKETING PRINTING SERVICES}

Moo Cards- Home of the popular "Mini Card", are based out of the UK but with the popularity
increasing in the USA, they have now opened up a USA branch and website. This is good for premades as they have alot of cute designs and you are sure to find something for all types of designers. Also they interface with Etsy, Facebook and Flikr, so if you have pictures of your work on those sites, you can easily upload from them. The downside is that the cards run a little high, (50 for $22 plus shipping). They also sell postcards as well as holiday cards and people tend to have good feedback and positive experiences ordering from them.

Vista Print- One of the more popular online printing services. Reviews for this site have been mixed, some having great experiences with customer service and products and some not. One of the benefits is it is a one stop marketing shop. They produce postcards, greeting card, posters, bags, hats, banners, books and a whole lot more. Also they usually have sales or discounts, so you can wait to buy different sets of materials.

Overnight Prints-Another popular online printing service. Generally positive reviews and they have competitive prices as well. The sell a variety of different sized cards (postcards, rack cards, fliers and etc) as well as magnates and bookmarks. One of the great things about them is that they consistently have great discounts , like now, everything is 20% off. The discounts are splayed across the front page so that you cannot miss them. They also have a variety of printing processes as well as paper and finishes , some of which are free.

123 Print
- This site also has mixed reviews, but they do have some products not found at other sites, like the pens and Post-it notes. The Post-It notes are good when you are at craft shows and maybe need to write something down like a product for the buyer to purchase later. You can write them on your own company official 3M Post-It Notes, so that way they can see your company info at the bottom when they look at it.

Got Print- They have a large selection of promotional materials and alot of price tiers for business cards. One promo I do like is the Notepads and the Event Tickets that you can do for your business. These would be great tools to use for Upcoming Promos or sales that you may have..

48 Hour Print- This is an option if you are in a pinch, since like the name indicated, its 48 hour guaranteed printing and processing of your order at no extra charge.Reviews have been mixed as well, but they do produce nice glossy booklets, great for those of you who want a wholesale or holiday catalog.

PS Print- In addition to the standard letterhead items, the do event tickets with the foil stamping as well as the CD jewel cases which are nice if you are sending files or images on cd....you can have your company logo on them.Reviews are also mixed for this site.

My 1 Stop- They really have a small selection of products which includes the business cards. But what they do have are gift cards as well as luggage tags and key tags, so if you were always interested in offering these items, but didn't know where to get them, this is one of the places.

*If you are unsure about quality, printing and etc, RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH. You can easily find feedback via google or forums on these companies. Also all of these companies have samples, so if you are still in questions, just request the samples of the product you wish to see.
*In addition , alot of these sites have ongoing promotions and discounts. VistaPrint , Moo and Overnight Prints constantly have specials ( 25% off business cards, free postcards, etc). Just Google the company name and put "coupon" or " discount" after it and any "specials" will come up.

HELP: BUSINESS RESOURCES & LISTINGS

I am constantly on the quest to find things that make not only my business better but also more efficient. Some info out there is useful, others....not so much, so the following two are resources that I have found to be useful for business. Some you may have heard of others you might not of, but they are both worth taking a gander at

{The Crafts Report}
This monthly magazine delivers tips and tricks on everything from creating great photographs of artist's work to setting up a show booth and handling legal issues that surround running a small business.
Each issue contains features of crafters who have turned their hobby into a profession. There are monthly columns on business basics, crafts law, advanced business concepts, crafts technology, retailing and more. They have listings of supplies, craft shows, and equipment which is especially good for that #1 question I always see..."WHAT IS THE BEST TENT TO BUY?"
To receive the report you can subscribe online at The Crafts Report Subscription for $40/yr for either print or digital, but if you can't wait and secretly you want to "thumb " thru it before you purchase, the do sell the "hard copies" at Barnes and Noble, Borders, Books-A-Million, Hastings and Jo-Ann Fabrics. The downside to that is there is no "set" location to which stores carry them, it is not based on size of area or size of store, but landscape. This means that areas where there are traditionally more "Crafters" located is where they sell it :( ........this is one of the times where living in a smaller town may be an advantage.
Good News though, after speaking to a lovely rep from the publishing company, it was suggested to purchase the digital version( same price as the magazine). No only does the digital version arrive quicker ( usually withing about 2 business day from puchase) it has more content. They also only have the Craft Show Listings in the digital version, they are no longer in the magazine. Not to mention that since it is digital they can add more articles and resources that they might have to cut to fit in a 40 page magazine.

PRO: With monthly subscription there is constantly new ideas and info for your business.
Suggest getting the digital version for more content and access to archives
CON: May be a bit overwhelming to the "newbie" crafter, may need to wait until you
have a few shows or experience under your belt, but still a good resource.

CAN YOUR CRAFT BUSINESS SUPPORT A FAMILY?

I can across this article and thought that is was a realistic approach to that popular "Quit your Day Job" from Etsy.

Can Your Craft Business Support a Family- PART 1

Can Your Craft Business Support a Family- PART 2

I thought that is offered some "realistic" advise for crafters who dream about "Quitting Your Day Job" and surviving on your art. One of the biggest gripes that I and many others have with Etsy's ongoing "Quit Your Day Job" series is lack of real information.
Alot of times, the same questions are asked and there is little to no in depth content. Most of the time they don't tell you that the person comes from a two income household or how long it took to become self supporting. Or more importantly the struggle and "realistic" goals and expectations one has to have in order to be successful. Instead, many times the article is a "glossed" over representation of what is needed to actually quit your day job.
Now with that being said, let me just say that the articles are still good to read as you find others who have started out just like you and are making it now. So from an inspiration standpoint, its good reading, it just needs to be supplemented with articles such as the one above.

TAKING A GREAT PHOTO: TIPS TO HELP YOU

I am always on the quest for better ways to take a great photo. I am no professional photographer, but have found a few things that are useful to the average joe trying to photograph there work.

These tips are for the "point and shoot" digital camera crowd, of course if you are more advanced in your photography knowledge, then this is standard knowledge for you.

KNOW YOUR CAMERA:
That means read the manual and know the different settings and modes on your camera. There are usually preset for Scenery, Nighttime, action , and other scenarios that you can use.Yes, some models are better than others, but if doesn't matter what amount of money you spend if you can't work it when you get it home. I suggest 10Mega pixels as the minimum for a digital, some people may argue with me , which is fine, but I think this is the least you can get to take a decent photo.The mega pixel rating of a digital camera determines how much fine detail you can capture in your shots, so the higher the mega pixel, the more detail in the photo.

MACRO MODE IS YOUR FRIEND:
Most digital cameras have a macro mode. This setting is great for taking close up shots of your products like rings or smaller objects. Most of the time the macro mode is represented by a flower symbol. Just turn on macro mode (whether a switch or button on camera), then get as close to it as your camera will allow. Make sure you allow the camera to focus properly before depressing the shutter button fully.

SHAKY HANDS = SHAKY PICTURE:
Sometimes you think you are holding your camera steady only to find out after the picture is taken that you weren't. Alot of cameras now have an "auto shake" feature. This is represented on my camera with a picture of a hand with wavy lines on either side of it. When this is turned on it automatically stabilizes the picture. This is good if you are a little shaky or if you don't have a tripod. The only downside to this is that on most cameras this feature is for auto mode only, so you will not be able to manually tweak settings like Iso, brightness and etc.

WHAT THE HELL IS ISO SETTING:
The ISO setting of a camera controls it's sensitivity to light. If you're taking a photo of a still object, like jewelry, then always use a low ISO setting. It allows for a longer shutter speed and produces a cleaner image. If you're shooting a moving object, like a child in one of your items, then a higher ISO setting of say 400 would be better. Do take note, however, that a higher ISO setting gives a faster shutter speed and requires less light.

EDITING THOSE PHOTOS WHEN YOU CAN'T MAKE SENSE OF PHOTOSHOP:
No matter how great a photo you take , it will most likely be needing some sort of editing. Whether its cropping the image to make it more dynamic or fixing the light/other color problems. The most common software is photoshop, but for some people its too complicated or too expensive. They do offer a "downgraded" version called "Photoshop Elements" but there are other alternatives. The following are three good free photo editing programs

Picnik- is a web based site which makes photo editing simple. You can have Picnik "auto correct" photos for you or you can manual do it in "advanced mode". The site is free to use with registration optional and it interfaces with your Flikr account. If you plan on using it frequently, then it will probably be best so register(free) to keep track of your photos.

Picasa 3- is software from google that you download . Since this is from Google , it makes sharing your photos easier as well.

Snipshot- is free photo editing software online similar to Picnik. One of the things that makes it interesting is that you can apply effects to your photos , similar to filters in Photoshop. They do offer a "Pro Account" , for a monthly free or they do a have "2 week" free that gives you access to more tools.

Gimp-is software that you download as well. This is a little more advanced than Picnik, but very easy to use.

Aviary- is free photo editing and web tool that really is geared toward design and creation. Similar to Photoshop, it allows you to not only apply effects to your photos, but also create other designs, like that all important Store Banner. They even have tutorials on their blog on how to make an "Etsy Shop Banner" using there product. This may be good for some of you who are a little "techno challenged" but still want a nice banner. If you are looking for more photo editing options than Picnik , but are not ready for the challenge of Photoshop, then Aviary is the best bet for you.

Paint.Net-is software that you download for computers that run Windows. It edits photos with similar tools to Gimp or Photoshop .NO THIS IS NOT THE MICROSOFT PAINT PROGRAM THAT YOU FIND FREE IN YOUR WINDOWS APPLICATION. This is a little more advanced thank the Microsoft paint program as it was originally intended to replace that free program. SO though every knows I am not a fan of Microsoft Paint as a graphic design program, if you are use to using Microsoft Paint, then this may be an alternative to you.

These are just a few programs, we think it really depends on your skill level and needs as to which is better for you . We suggest that if you are unsure, try them all out and see what works best for you.

Feed Your Soul: The Freebie Art Project

With the recession looking as if it is going nowhere soon, justifying spending any extra money on art is hard to do. Enter Feed Your Soul .........................................
Feed Your Soul is a free art project where each month artists are invited to participate and to contribute a print which is totally free and available for download (personal use only).
This project is coordinated by Jen Wallace, the writer of the site Indie Fixx, to help art lovers feed their souls with art in these recessionary times and to help artists promote their work.Each week (usually on Monday) two or more prints are added to the available downloads.
Depending on the quality of printer you have you can download the desired art (in pdf form) and print out on your home printer (frame and hang as picture above). Or , after download, you can save and have sent to printer of your choice, whether local or another an online printer like Imagekind, where you can upload file and print on a variety of choices ( like glossy, traditional canvas, etc) and they even frame as well. This is a good option for those of you who like "one stop" shopping. Just remember that this is for "personal use" and not for profit.

The great thing about Feed Your Soul is that they have a list of artist with their bio and website, so if you would like to see other work and purchase from a particular artist you can. The only downside is that they don't keep archives, so if you see a picture then I suggest you download immediately as you never know when you will get it for free again...if ever.
If you are an artist and would like to submit your work for consideration, just go to the site and send an email with your url or 1-2 images of your work. The artist list is usually booked at least a month in advanced so it may take us them a while to get back to you....be patient.

Edible Play Dough: um or should I say Fun Dough?: A Tutorial

In my quest to find make at home play dough ( or as we call it "Fun Dough" as Playskool has that name on lock) I have accumulated several recipes that I think are good ...because as well all know all "Fun Dough" isn't equal!
Edible fun dough is great because anyone who deals with kids knows that it toys will eventually end up in a child's mouth and now with it being edible you will not have to worry about calling poison control or having child protective services making a "visit" to talk about your unfit parenting skills. Also , if you are making this for yourself ( which is fine, we don't judge...and I play with it as well) then these are great for a variety of craft projects and smell great. Just note that some of these recipes contain peanut butter, so if you or the person that you are making this for is allergic to nuts, then please do not use.

The following are a variety of recipes that are my fav's :

{Kool-Aid Play Dough}
1 cup flour
1 cup water
1/2 cup salt

3 teaspoons Cream of Tartar

1 package Kool-Aid Mix (any flavor of unsweetened)

1 tablespoon cooking oil

Mix dry ingredients together in a lare saucepa
n. Slowly add water mixed with oil and stir over medium heat until mixture thickens to dough. Turn out onto a heatproof bread board or counter top and knead until cool enough for children to handle. Dough will be the color of the Kool-Aid mix and will smell like the Kool-Aid mix. (Can be stored in a tightly covered container for up to six months)

{Jell-O Play Dough}
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 cup water
1 tablespoon oil
2 teaspoons Cream of Tartar
1 (3-1/2 oz.) package "unsweetened" Jell-O

Mix all ingredients together and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until consistency of mashed potatoes. Let cool and knead with flou
red hands until dry.
Storage: This recipe needs to cool completely "before" storing it in an airtight container!
Note: The items made from this play dough recipe can be painted when they are dry.

{Oatmeal Play Dough}
1 part flour
2 parts oatmeal
1 part water

Mix ingredients together and form into shapes.
Note: The items made from this play dough recipe can be painted when they are dry.

{Peanut Butter/Graham Cracker Play Dough}
Use equal amounts of Peanut Butter and Marsh
mallow Cream Graham Crackers Crumble up Graham Crackers into crumbs, then set these aside.Mix the peanut butter and Marshmallow Cream together . Cover surface area with wax paper or use a breadboard, let children make into shapes. Roll shapes in Graham Cracker crumbs, then eat! Storage: When not using, MUST be stored in an airtight container. Note: This is more of an interactive dessert for kids more so than play dough, but great fun

{Peanut Butter Play Dough}
one 18-oz. jar creamy peanut butter

6 tablespoons honey
3/4 cup non-fat dry milk

Mix ingredients together, using varying amounts of dry milk for desired consistencies. Knead it with fingers, forming into desired shapes, adding other foods like M&M's or peanuts for eyes, mouths, etc. Great fun!
Storage: When not using, MUST be stored i
n an airtight container.

{Yummy Edible Play Dough Recipe}
1 1/4 Cup confectioners' sugar 1 1/4 Cup powdered milk 1 Cup corn syrup 1 Cup peanut butter Mix ingredients together in bowl. Kids can mold, create and eat when finished.

{Girl Scout Peanut Butter Play Dough}

1 cup peanut butter
1/2 cup honey
2 cups powdered sugar

Mix all ingredients in a bowl, using your hand
s. Dough should feel soft and pliable. Form shapes and be creative!
Storage: When not using, MUST be stored in an airtight container.

{Smooth Peanut Butter Play Dough}
2 cups smooth peanut butter
2 cups rolled oats
2 cups dried milk
2/3 cups honey

Mix all ingredients until thoroughly combined.
Storage:
When not using, MUST be stored in an airtight container

{Frosting Play Dough}
1 can frosting (any flavor)
1-1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 cup creamy peanut butter

Mix together until dough reaches desired consistency
Storage: When not using, MUST be stored in an
airtight container and refrigerated. Next time you want to use it, let it come to room temperature for pliable dough.

{Chocolate Play Dough}
8 oz. semisweet chocolate
1/4 cup plus one tablespoon light corn syrup

Melt the chocolate in a metal bowl set over a pan of simmering water (a double boiler). Stir the chocolate with a spoon until smooth, then stir in the corn syrup. The chocolate will stiffen almost immediately but stir completely combined. Transfer the chocolate to a sturdy plastic bag and refrigerate until firm; the consistency will be that of Play Dough.
When firm, the dough can be worked by kneading. If it is too hard, cut off small pieces and knead until pliable. If the dough sticks to the counter when rolling, lightly spray counter or breadboard with vegetable spray or lightly grease with vegetable oil.
Hand shape the dough into a rope or braid, making t
wo or three long ropes and twist or braid them together -- can be used as the outside edge on top of a cake or around the base.
Make ribbons to cover the cake. To do this, pat your dough into a disk shape and roll dough out to desired thickness using a rolling pin or else use a manual pasta machine.
Storage: When not using, MUST be stored in an airtight container and refrigerate.

I find that using a wooden spoon works best when mixing play dough and also a spatula. Also some of these doughs need to be refrigerated ..as they are made with edible items. Of course it will firm up in the fridge so once you remove, you can let sit for a couple of minutes and/or knead in your hands with a little canola oil( not much, just lightly coat your hands). If you can't find an air tight container or if you don't have a "vacuum saver" bags, you can just put in zip lock back and press out the air.

The Craft Fair: Tips & Tricks For A Smoother Day

Even though the summer craft season is winding down, the fall and holiday craft show season is just heating up! I am always on the hunt for new info about upcoming show, tips, tricks or any other info that I may not have thought of that will make my life and show experience easier.
I have seen alot of info over the years, so here is just some of my tips that will hopefully help you or at least give you ideas!

{TIPS}
Having done Craft Shows & Fairs for awhile, here are some of my following tips and info that have helped me over the years:

  • Price all items to the dollar to avoid dealing with loose change. So if something is $3.50, either price it at $3 or $4. It is easier and will save you and the customer hassles.

  • Bring a buddy along, even if they don't stay for the whole event( some people just can't seem to get up early on the weekends) ask them to come for a couple of hours to man your table during peak times like 11-3 or 12-4, etc so that you can take a break , walk around or etc.

  • Bring CHANGE, CHANGE and more CHANGE. I have found that people tend to make a stop at the ATM before a show, anticipating buying, so they pay with nice $20 dollar bills. The best ratio I have found is fifty $1 dollar bills , two $10 dollar bills and six $5 dollar bills for a total of $100 dollars. Whatever ratio you do , just make sure to bring alot of ones like you are going to the strip club.

  • Because people are going green and trying to conserve , I have found that lately more people are not giving out bags with there merchandise. But it is handy to have some because there will be people who ask for them. If you are not going to provide "Company Bags" , (which we highly suggest )with your logo on them or etc, then those good ole plain plastic bags or paper bags from the will do.

  • If you have never done a show before and have the time and space, try setting up your table in your home (or garage) and see how it looks, that way you can fix anything you don't like about it before you get to the show.

  • Don't bring out your whole inventory, I suggest bringing out a nice range of pieces but not each and everything you make

  • If you cannot enclose the sides of your tent and need to, just purchase heavy shower curtains (the ones with the metal grommets) and clamp them underneath canopy to metal frame with grommet size down. Then tie down bottom ends thru grommets at each corner to pull tight. Viola! Four walls and since shower curtains come in a variety of colors you can find a solid one in to match your canopy color.

  • No need to buy a Tablecloth, just purchase a Full or Queen size flat sheet(not the fitted) for your table cloth. You can purchase these at any linen store, Walmart, Kmart or Target in variety of solid colors for just a few dollars. And the good part is that they come in hundreds of colors are durable and can be easily replaced.

  • I suggest an apron or pouch for the cash , as I have heard horror stories of those big cumbersome cash boxes getting taken. With a pouch or apron you can always have it on you.

  • Make sure to take a variety of priced items, especially with this economy. This is a buyers market, so people are more apt to make a variety of smaller priced purchases as opposed to one large one. Of course this also depends on your product. So if you have a larger product maybe make smaller items "specifically " for the craft show and label them "Limited Edition" so that customers know this is the only place and time to get it.
{TABLE}
One of the best tables that I have found ( and trust me I have reasearched and gone thru alot of tables) is this 6ft Folding Table (standard craft show size) at Walmart. They also sell the brand at Target as well. Though the standard price is around $89, they usually have it on sale and you can get it for $40-$60, maybe even cheaper. This table is sturdy and has a nice hard High-density polyethylene top as well as easy to carry and set up with handle to carry. If also comes in 4ft size for those of you needing smaller tables.

Or you can also get a nice 6ft Resin Folding Table at Amazon , just remember that a table without the center seam will always be more durable. If you don't have a car that can carry a non folding table, then these are the best ones to get. And if you still are unsure about the amount of weight the table can hold, you can always place a "stablizer" underneath the table where the seam is located. Like maybe stack your cartons/boxes that you carried your products in under the seam.

{CANOPY}

If you are serious about doing craft shows, you will end up at some point needing a canopy. They are large, cumbersome and can be annoying to lug around, but they are necessary.
The most popular canopy is the EZ UP, pop up tent. Though they are easy to use( most of the time) , they are not "Water Proof". And that is VERY IMPORTANT. Most Pop Up tents are "water repellent" and not "water proof", so that means that the water will bead off for awhile, but eventually it will soak thru ( as I have found out the hard way)
If price is the main issue for you, then you can get an EZ UP or any other pop up tent from EBAY alot of them coming with four walls and some with a roller bag for easy transport. If you want to spend a little more to get a good tent, we recommend Swiss Gear Canopy, it is Water Proof , pop up construction and comes in a canvas zip up bag with wheels for easy transport. You can get them for about $100 but check Ebay as you may get it cheaper. Just remember that most craft show spaces are 10x10, so just get the 10x10 tent size .
The following are places to find canopies of a variety of prices and styles.

{WHERE TO APPLY}
One of the number one questions I get asked is "Where do you find the info for the shows? So I have compiled a list of some( I am sure not all) of the better avenues to find show for your area. The good thing about all of these is that they can be categorized by city/state. But one of the best resources is "word of mouth" , so when you are at a craft show talk to your neighboor. Find out how they heard about the show, what other shows they do and more importantly what kind of turnout business the shows tend to do. Actual first hand account of an event is the best information to have...do you actually think the promoter of the event is going to tell you the "real truth" about turnout and buying?

So you believe that you have a great product and want to get it out, now what are some of the venues to sell your "crafty goodness"? Below are a couple of sites that a seller can set up a store for there items. Since most everyone of the planet is familiar with Ebay , "the mass market seller site" and Etsy, "the handmade & vintage site" those are not included on the list. These are alternative or additional ( depending on how you look at it) seller sites.

There are positives and negatives to every site and as with any online venue, its all about traffic. You can have the greatest product and shop in the world, but if no one sees you or knows where you are, then it doesn't matter. I suggest before committing to anything and taking the time to set up your shop in any of these venues, to really do your research. Some of these sites get more traffic than others and some of them are easier to setup and sell than others. Yes, one may be cheaper with lower or no fees , low commission and ease of use, but if it is not getting alot of traffic then what is the point?
No matter what site you are on , the key is to promote off the site, get the word out there about your product!

If you know of any other sites of venues, share it with us!

Tag your It: Creative Packaging

Alot of times sellers forget that the packaging of there item is just as important as the actual item. This was something that I was reminded of when I purchased a lovely item ( I won't say what and by whom on this blog, due to the nature of the post, lol) that was really lacking in the packaing. I thought , how great there item could be with just a few (inexpensive) items ....and how much business they are actually missing out on becuase of lack of packaging. So this is dedicated to some inexpensive ideas ( let's face it, we are in a recession and need a break) that can be used by anyone.
The obvious choice for packaging is wrapping your item in some colorful wrapping paper that you have happened to find in the back of the closet ,leftover from Chrismas , but that only works if you gotten the "holiday nuetral" items and not some Santa laden monstrosity. Also, it is quite hard if you have items that are big or awkwardly shaped and regular ole' wrapping paper, just won't do.

PRETTY PAPER
The easiest (and most popular) packaging material is brown Kraft Paper. Made from wood pulp this paper is sturdy as well as strong and since it is a nice nuetral color, paired with a few small items it can really make your packages stand out.
Stamps are a good way of changing the craft paper quickly and cheaply. If you have a company stamp, this is a great way to brand yourself and create some " company wrapping paper".

If you are feeling crafty, the simplest way is to draw design and rub off on gum paste, then take an x-acto knife and cut it out...viola! a very rudimentary stamp. But, if you are not handy with the creativity and have put down your knife to serve good and not evil, then have someone make your stamp. Now you can get find a variety of stamp makers very cheaply at etsy.com...just write in "custom stamp". I have actually seen people use those white erasers when they can't find the traditional block to make the eraser.lol.. Which I guess is a way to practice without paying for the materials. Because if the little experiment fails, you always have an eraser.

Butcher Paper is another great way to wrap your item, especially if you are doing soap or another beauty based item. Butcher paper is bleached kraft paper, therefore accounting for the white color, so this is a good alternative to brown kraft paper. It is just as sturdy(being that it is bleached kraft paper) but in white color which matches every color you may pair it with. One of the best places to get kraft paper is from your local Dollar Store. Every city has one, and every city usually has better ones. In NYC, our's is called Jack's World, every New Yorker goes there not just for the dollar items, but for the Kitchen Items on the second floor. If you are not sure which one is the "better" one in your city, just go to the biggest one in your town

BOXING IT UP!
I love getting items in boxes, but boxing your items can be expensive . If you can't afford the fancy boxes, then try a nice plain box and accessorize it. Try adding striped or patterned ribbon to box like this Boxed Set. You don't need to have a fancy bow, you can simply make a band and attach the ends with invisible double stick tape or "Glue Dots". Or try Raffia or Twine wrapped several times around item.

Sometimes you may want to ship your items in a box, like the one pictured her from Pistachio Press. These "Mailers" come in a variety of sizes , most notably from Uline. These are good if you want to just add your label or write with a big black sharpe on the box. What most people do not know is that you can order (online only) free boxes from the United States Postal Office. There are some downsides to this though. There are only priority boxes available, which sometimes(depending on weight) is cheaper than sending regular mail. The USPS ships the cheapest way possible, so that means it ships Parcel Post which can take up to 3-4 weeks depending on where you live. So you need to plan ahead if you are using that option.

Kraft boxes are great for all types of items especially jewelry.You can added ribbon , appliques or any other embellishments like Viva to personalize. These boxes in various sizes can be found in several places. If you just want a few to try out, then maybe by them from an Etsy Seller ( type in Kraft Box) or if you need alot, try Ebay or Paper Mart. Below are some of different ways to dress up the "box" that are easy and inexpensive.

C IS FOR COOKIE!

When it comes to food packaging, I find simpler is better. You definitely want to be able to see what it is you are eating, so in this category, the cellophane wrapper is king. They are inexpensive, easy to get and not to mention they will end up in your local landfill, lol. They now offer a selection of FDA approved Bio Degradable cellephane bags, just note they are more expensive than the regular one. A good place to get both kinds is Clear Bags.

One of the best food packing supplies that I like is the Kraft Tie Bags.Usually the are use for coffee, but I find that they are great for cookies, candy or any solid food. Some come with windows and some are solid, both are great for use to use with your company label. These bags have a flat bottom and an easy to use tin tie closure built in. All you need to do is fill them, fold the ties in and they are ready to go!. They great thing is that they are reclosable as well.

COMPANY LABELS
Labels for your company are the easy way to brand your items and store. At Gramkin Paper Studio we make Hangtags and Labels for all types of shops like we did for Delectably ReFashioned (pictured), though we think of ourselves as the best (lol) you can find a variety of sellers of labels on the web...as well as make them yourselves.

PACKAGING AND SHIPPING RESOURCES

I know that some people are very stingy when it comes to sharing information. We are not as we are confident in our products as well as make alot of our things. So
